  • Leo Donations a Success!

Our drive for leos for foster chldren was way more successful than we could have imagined. Our folks gave us 269 leos and we donated 99 of them to Treehouse. We gave the very best ones so the girls could have close-to-new leos for gymnastics. Thanks everyone and thanks to Lisa for organizing everything!

  • Level 7's Take Third Too! (PIX!!)

SGA's eight Level 7 gymnasts combined a wide variety of scores to put together a 110.725 team score and ace out Elite Gymnastics by .375 for third place at the Spirit of the Flame Challenge in San Jose February 27th. SGA was just .4 less that second place Westside Gymnastics but 3.425 behind host squad West Valley Gymnastics which took first in every event. Highlights were SGA's second on bars and second on beam with fourths in vault and Floor.

Julie Takes OffJulie Huang led the way with a 37.425 and a tie for first on bars with a 9.5 while Zoe McNeil was second in her division with a 36.65 all-around and second on vault. Wallis Boram also finished strongly in her division with a 36.6 all-around and thirds in bars, beam and floor.

Overall, the girls scored wel before the tough national-level judges: Lancy Huang (35.175); Areal Good Voice (35.125), Tani Hyashi (34.85), Margaret Long (34.025) and Kim Kramers (33.325).

Below is a shot of George getting ready for the dismount. I can't make out who the gymnast is... Anyone?

  • Level 4's Take 3rd! Amalie DOES it by herself!! (PIX!)

Congrats to SGA's level 4's. Wtih 67 teams competing, they came in third -- quite a respectable showing.

And a special congrats to Amalie Ratliff our lone Level 5. Of the four 5's schedule for the meet, two could not make it to the meet. One, Margaret Chi, strained a hip flexor playing soccer. That left Amalie all by herself in the meet against 70 other kids! To her great credit, Amalie battled hard, took third in vault and ninth all-around in her age group. Way to Go Amalie!!!

Here are some pix, courtesy of Carla Petersen:

Character is part of SGA's training and here it  includes the courage to be on the floor, by yourself, in a huge meet.

Olivia Ladesma gets ready to start here routine.   Big Team Sisters can help, though.

Judy Celovsky shows great form on bars.  We're not sure who this was! Anyone?

Holding form on bars is the toughest.

Just before going, Coach checks for body tightness.

  • SOME of us make it San Jose!

The early birds among the teamsters made it to San Jose last night (Thursday) on a completely full Southwest flight. John and Barbara were cagey: they signed in early and got on the plane first to get their seats but Wallace, Breanne and Addie didn't use the online check-in!!! Ummm..... they were like 297th out of 300 boarders, I think!!! But they DID get on!

We didn't get a chance to go into town together -- we had to rent a car and they took a cab [How can three girls have twenty pieces of luggage?] Thankfully, the San Jose Marriott turned out to be nice -- except they charge for internet! That's just NOT right!! Free the Internet!! On lthe other hand, the hotel is right next to the meet site, the local convention center.

This is so different from when my girls were competing. Back then, we all traveled together in a huge mob of kids and parents. What fun! It was like a giant three-day party.... Well, hopefully, everyone will be here tomorrow and ready to rock. Stand by for updates.

  • JO's Head for San Jose

The Junior Olympic team has had a few local meets to get over their early-season jitters and now it's time to rock with the big girls. They're headed for San Jose this weekend to compete with kids from all over Region II -- essentially the American Southwest. There are far more competitive gyms and competitive gymnasts there than there are in Region 2 (the Pacific Northwest) so we're going to see some great gymnastics. Wish us luck!

  • Boys Team Takes Third!

At the Coaches Invitational February 7th. Quite a feat with thirty teams competing! Congrats!

  • Salmon Bay HIts Record Enrollment

It's probably a record but we can't be absolutely sure: our new Salmon Bay gym is over 800 enrolled students just 4 1/2 months after opening. Although many of our Lake City students moved to Salmon Bay, we're happy at Lake City because our gym is way less crowded than it was last year (and besides, we still have more students than they do!). Thanks to all our customers at Salmon Bay and congratulations to the staff there.

  • SGA Supports Cal State Gymnastics

Just before school was to start last year, the athletic department at Cal State Fullerton decided to axe the gymnastics team. Through a country-wide appeal by USA Gymnastics, money was raised almost immediately to fund the team's season and SGA sent off $100 to help out. This year, we've repeated our gift to support collegiate gymnastics -- which is where we aim for our optional gymnasts to go. If you'd like to support collegiate gymnastics, the Husky squad at UW can always use boosters and Cal State Fullerton's team can use your help [See the California State University, Fullerton Philanthropic Foundation, 657-278-2118.]
